PRESERVING YOUR NATURAL VALVE
Aortic valve repair
In some patients, the aortic valve can be reconstructed instead of replaced with an artificial valve.
Depending on the cause of the problem, the surgeon may repair the valve leaflets, stabilize the base of the valve or reconstruct the surrounding aortic root. Not every valve can or should be repaired, so the team carefully evaluates whether repair is likely to provide a safe and lasting result.

Specialized Valve Reconstruction
Bicuspid aortic valve repair
For selected patients, a bicuspid valve may be reshaped and stabilized so that it functions more normally.
The team evaluates the valve leaflets, the base of the valve and any enlargement of the aortic root or ascending aorta. Treatment may involve valve repair alone or repair combined with surgery on the enlarged aorta.

A bicuspid valve is different from birth. Repair aims to improve how it works while addressing any nearby aortic enlargement.
Preserving the Valve During Aortic Surgery
Valve-sparing aortic root replacement
When the aortic root is enlarged but the valve can still function well, the diseased aorta may be replaced while preserving the patient’s own valve.
This operation is sometimes called the David procedure. It may be considered for selected patients with an aortic root aneurysm, Marfan syndrome or another connective tissue condition.
Simply Put
The weakened part of the aorta is replaced, but your natural valve remains in place.
An Alternative to an Artificial Aortic Valve
Ross procedure
During the Ross procedure, the patient’s pulmonary valve is moved into the aortic position, and a biological valve is placed in the pulmonary position.
This operation may be considered for carefully selected children, younger adults, active patients and people who hope to avoid lifelong blood-thinning medication. Because it is technically complex, careful patient selection and extensive surgical experience are important.

Your own living valve is used to replace the diseased aortic valve.
Complex Aortic Reconstruction
Complex aortic aneurysm repair
Large or extensive aneurysms may require open surgical reconstruction or another advanced treatment approach.
The plan depends on the location of the aneurysm, your anatomy, the condition of the surrounding aorta and whether you have undergone previous aortic treatment. Thoracoabdominal aneurysms often require highly coordinated surgical and critical-care planning.
